Gabriel Arcand
Gabriel Arcand (born June 4, 1949 in Deschambault-Grondines ) is a French-Canadian actor .
Life
Arcand was born in Deschambault-Grondines, Québec , in 1949 . He grew up with two older brothers: Denys Arcand (* 1941) worked as a film director, Bernard Arcand (1945–2009) tried his hand at acting for a short time and later became an anthropologist. The family moved to Montréal when Arcand was still a child. He attended the Collège Sainte-Marie, where he completed his Baccalauréat . Arcand was interested in the theater as a teenager and was a member of Paul Buissonneau's theater group La roulotte in 1967 and 1968 . Arcand studied philosophy at McGill University from the late 1960s to 1971 . He then worked at the Center national dramatique du Sud-Est in Montréal and in 1973 at Jerzy Grotowski's Teatr Laboratory in Wroclaw. In 1973 he founded the theater group Le groupe de la veillée with Marie Eykel , Laurent Rivard and Alain Lamontagne , with whom he staged numerous plays.
Arcand came to film in the early 1970s and made his screen debut in Denys Arcand's La maudite galette in 1972 . Numerous films followed under the direction of his brother. His breakthrough as an actor came with the character of Ovide Plouffe in Les Plouffe (1981) and the multi-part film Le crime d'Ovide Plouffe (1984). Arcand won a Genie Award for Best Actor in 1985 for Le crime d'Ovide Plouffe , directed by his brother . Another genius award, this time for Best Supporting Actor, followed in 1987 for his portrayal in The Fall of the American Empire . Arcand received other awards for the love drama Post Mortem , published in 1999, and for Le démantèlement from 2013, in which he played a sheep farm owner . For his portrayal of Pierre Lesage in The Canadian Journey , Arcand received his first César nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2017 .
