Erdmann Gottreich Christaller (born December 10, 1857 in Akropong, Ghana , † 1922 in Stuttgart ) was a German writer and Protestant pastor.

Life

The son of the missionary Johann Gottlieb Christaller from Winnenden grew up in different places, mostly in institutions, including in the boys' house of the Basel Mission . In 1868 his father returned from Africa for health reasons and settled in Schorndorf , he also took his children with him.

After attending the Latin school in Schorndorf, he came to the Tübingen monastery and studied theology, which he had little inclination to do. After completing the first theological examination, he went to Munich, where he made his way as a writer, from 1886 he was editor of the Frankenthaler Zeitung.

In his book The Aristocracy of Spirit as a Solution to the Social Question , published in 1885 , he takes the view: “We need a new, aristocratic humanity. State measures are therefore to be taken to exclude all those members of society from procreation who are physically, morally, and spiritually inferior. "

In order to pay the study costs reclaimed by the Württemberg church authorities, he had to accept an appointment as pastor, first to Berneck in 1888 , and to Ottenhausen (today the municipality of Straubenhardt ) in 1894 . In 1890, after a six-day engagement, he married 18-year-old Helene Heyer . The daughter of a Darmstadt lawyer had great success as a later writer with a young girl novel written by her and published in 1907.

In 1901 he left his office, presumably because of the satire he had written on the unpopular pastoral profession, and officially he resigned from church service due to hearing loss. The couple moved to Jugenheim an der Bergstrasse . The couple had four children, including Walter Christaller (1893–1969). His wife divorced him in 1917 and later settled in Jugenheim.
