Harald "Hari" Berger (born October 31, 1972 in Linz ; † December 20, 2006 in Hintersee ) was an Austrian mountaineer and world champion in ice climbing .

Life

Harald Berger grew up in Linz and began climbing in 1986 . In Salzburg , he studied sport science , which he obtained in 1996 with the academic degree Mag. Phil. completed. Professionally, he was a mountain guide and did mountain sports as a professional .

Harald Berger was out and about in all facets of climbing. He was particularly successful as an ice and mixed climber . Among other things, he managed the second ascent of the mixed route The Game ( M13 / Canada), which was probably the most difficult mixed route in the world until 2006. In 2002 he won the Ice Climbing World Cup for the first time and won it again in 2003 and 2006. In 2003 he also became world champion and defended the title in 2004 and 2005. He also climbed extremely difficult on rocks. He succeeded in repeating the so-called “Alpine trilogy” for the first time: The Emperor's New Clothes ( 8b + / 9 SL), The End of Silence (8b + / 11 SL), Silbergeier (8b + / 6 SL). He was also spoiled for success in the sports of base jumping and skydiving .

On the afternoon of December 20, 2006, Harald Berger climbed in an ice chapel below the Wieserhörndl in the Osterhorn group . It is likely that the overhanging ice floe was loosened and broken off by a pimple strike . His body was buried under this huge sheet of ice with an estimated weight of 150 tons. Harald Berger's body could only be recovered after several hours, as the recovery work was very difficult.

Harald Berger left behind his wife and a daughter who was born just a few hours after the fatal accident.
