action

Murray's bookstore in New York is no longer viable and he has to close it. To make money, Murray persuades his friend Fioravante, who works in a flower shop, to act as a gigolo to comfort lonely but wealthy women. He can't imagine this role at first, but agrees in view of the pile of unpaid bills. As a stage name they choose "Dan Bongo" for Murray as manager and "Virgil" for Fioravante.

The first customer is Dr. Parker, Murray's dermatologist . She is delighted with Fioravante's abilities and skills. Fioravante receives a well-filled envelope; also Dr. Parker's friend Selima calls on Fioravente's services.

As the next customer, Murray acquires the rabbi widow Avigal. Their mood improves significantly thanks to Fioravante's sensitive support. However, Avigal is being watched by her neighbor Dovi, who works for the Shomrim Jewish Citizens' Guard and has his own eye on the beautiful widow. Selima and Dr. Parker book Fioravante for a ménage-à-trois . Both are in a good mood, but this time Fioravante fails; astutely analyzes Dr. Parker, he was in love with Avigal.

Meanwhile, Dovi has Murray dragged in front of a rabbinical court. Before the bearded old men can judge him, Avigal appears and confesses to having been touched by a man. "Out of loneliness". Murray is free again. Dovi goes Avigal in patrol cars home and confesses his love. When she notices that she is not saying that she does not love him, hope grows in Dovi.

Avigal says goodbye to Fioravante. He then wants to leave town, meets Murray in a pub and gives him a flower. Murray makes contact with an attractive woman who also sits in the bar and advertises Fioravante's services as a “plumber and electrician”. The woman says she will remember it. Whether Fioravante actually drives remains open at the end of the film.

reception

At the Berliner Zeitung , Gerhard Midding said: “This film demands a good amount of imagination from everyone involved: from the artists in front of and behind the camera, certainly also from their financiers and especially from the moviegoers. You have to imagine that first: Woody Allen as a pimp; John Turturro as a successful male whore; Sharon Stone as a shy doctor who is afraid of having erotically missed something; and Vanessa Paradis as a rabbi's widow! At best Liev Schreiber as a kosher police officer can be accepted straight away. "

In the world it can be read: “'Suddenly Gigolo' initially has everything in its attitude to be loved as a film, but its gentleness mutates into the despondency of a lover who, out of sheer friendliness, does not know that and when he can lend a hand . ”It goes on to say:“ Halfway through the route, the film runs out of breath, as if Turturro had lost the courage to follow through with his pleasurable concept. ”

Frank Arnold from epd Film awarded 4 out of 5 stars. He praised Turturro, "whose excursions behind the camera keep producing something unusual". The character of Murray, embodied by Woody Allen, is reminiscent of “many characters from his own early films, a little less awkward, but with a strong business acumen; his dialogues ”are“ pure for everyone ”. Turturro, on the other hand, leaves his "Fioravante many secrets, although some close-ups make it clear that he is skilled with his hands".

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
