Sacha Vierny (born August 10, 1919 in Bois-le-Roi , Seine-et-Marne department , † May 15, 2001 in Vannes ) was a French cameraman .

Life

Vierny studied at the IDHEC and ENPC film schools . From 1947 he assisted various camera crews, at the beginning of the 1950s he was responsible for the photography of short films. Together with Ghislain Cloquet, he was hired for the first time as chief cameraman for the film Nacht und Nebel . A particularly intensive and long-term collaboration resulted with Alain Resnais , for whose films he developed a very special aesthetic: “What is particularly remarkable is its multi-faceted lighting, which makes the objects in his pictures appear particularly three-dimensional and is usually associated with a reliably controlled depth of field. “A similar intensive collaboration followed with Peter Greenaway , with whom he composed images for a whole series of films that corresponded to the director's style.
