Company history

The origins of Universa go back to 1843, the year Universa Health Insurance was founded. This makes it the oldest private health insurance in Germany.

In the middle of the 19th century the state had not yet taken on social welfare. In order to be able to cover the loss of earnings due to illness, on the initiative of Georg Heine, a Nuremberg tobacco factory worker, on March 5, 1843, Nuremberg tobacco factory workers founded a health support association for tobacco factory workers . In the following years this became the health support association for factory workers and later the Nuremberg general health support association .

With the foundation of the Nuremberg Women's Foundation in 1857, the death benefit was introduced. This facility was the forerunner of today's Universa life insurance.

In 1922, insurance against death and survival was introduced. One year later, the Nuremberg general health support association merged with the general health insurance fund.

In 1933 the general people's death fund was approved, to which the life insurance portfolio of the general people's health insurance fund was transferred in the course of the separation of branches. One year later, the medical expenses insurance could be taken up.

In 1951 the Allgemeine Volkssterbekasse was converted into a large mutual insurance association under the name Universa Lebensversicherungsanstalt aG. At the same time, Universa Sachversicherungsgesellschaft aG was founded and the name "Universa" was introduced for both companies. Another year later, the company moved into the new main administration building at Sulzbacher Strasse 1–7 in Nuremberg. The headquarters of the Universa are still here today.

In 1957, the business area was expanded to include the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Berlin. In addition, uniVersa became a founding member of Aachener Bausparkasse AG and began working together.

In 1965 the property insurance portfolio was transferred to the newly founded Universa Versicherungs-AG and the company name Universa Krankenversicherung aG , which is still valid today , was introduced.

In 1986 the company was renamed Universa Lebensversicherung aG and Universa Allgemeine Versicherung AG, which are still valid today .
