Yehudi Wyner

Yehudi Wyner (born June 1, 1929 in Calgary ) is an American composer, pianist and music teacher.

Life

The son of the Russian-Jewish composer Lazar Weiner grew up in New York and graduated from the Juilliard School of Music in 1946 with a diploma in piano. He then studied at Yale University with Richard Donovan and Paul Hindemith and at Harvard University with Walter Piston . Winning a Rome Prize enabled him to study at the American Academy in Rome from 1953 to 1956 .

After his return to the USA, Wyner worked as a piano soloist, chamber musician and piano accompanist, conducted various chamber and vocal ensembles and was musical director of the Turnau Opera and the New Haven Opera Society . From 1963 to 1977 he taught (including composition) at Yale University , from 1975 to 1997 at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood. In addition, he was professor at the State University of New York from 1978 to 1989 and dean of the music faculty for several years. He taught as a visiting professor at Cornell University from 1986 to 1987 and at Brandeis University from 1987 to 1988 , where he subsequently held the Walter W. Naumburg Professorship for Composition until 1991 and headed the Brandeis Contemporary Chamber Players . As composer-in-residence, he worked at the American Academy in Rome in 1991 and at the Rockefeller Center in Bellagio in 1998. His students included Robert Beaser , Chester Biscardi , Martin Brody , Donald Wheelock , Yu-Hui Chang , Laurie San Martin , Tom Johnson , Lewis Spratlan , Craig Walsh and Michael H. Weinstein .

Wyner composed more than 60 works, including pieces for orchestra, chamber music, songs and works for solo instruments as well as liturgical works. In 1998 he received the Elise Stoeger Award from the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society for his chamber music work. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2006 for his piano concerto Chiavi in ​​mano , a work commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra , which premiered in 2005 with Robert D. Levin . He has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 1999 . In 2008 he was honored with admission to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Wyner has been married to the singer Susan Davenny-Wyner since 1967 .
