Matt Haimovitz
Matt Haimovitz (born December 3, 1970 in Bat Yam , Israel ) is a cellist , classical composer, university lecturer and music producer who now lives in the USA and Montreal , Canada . He mainly plays a cello by Matteo Goffriller from 1710.
Origin, family and early years
Haimowitz's parents, Meir and Marlena Haimowitz, came to Israel from Romania , where Matt Haimovitz was born. When he was five, the family immigrated to Palo Alto , California , USA .
From the age of seven Haimovitz received cello lessons from Irene Sharp in California and two years later from Gábor Rejto . When Haimovitz was twelve years old, Itzhak Perlman discovered him during a music camp in Santa Barbara and put him in contact with Leonard Rose . In 1983, his family moved to New York to continue his studies with Rose at the Juilliard School .
In February 1985, Haimovitz gave a concert with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , which was recorded in sound and video and broadcast on Israeli television and is viewed as a career breakthrough. In 1986 an American tour with Mehta and the orchestra as well as concerts with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra followed . As a result, Haimovitz performed with a large number of well-known orchestras and conductors around the world. In 1987 Haimovitz signed an exclusive contract with the Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft , which resulted in a number of noteworthy recordings, also outside the standard repertoire.
Haimovitz is married to the composer Luna Pearl Woolf , the couple have two daughters.
Further career
After completing his BA degree from Harvard College in 1996 magna cum laude and the end of his contract with Deutsche Grammophon, Haimovitz increasingly turned to works and performance forms that did not fall within the usual standards of classical musicians. A tour in 2002 attracted considerable attention, during which Haimovitz performed, among other things, Johann Sebastian Bach's cello suites in nightclubs , restaurants and other locations in a large number of large and small cities in the United States that are extremely unusual for this type of music. This was followed by his Anthem tour in 2003 , during which he performed a large number of American compositions in similar locations, including his interpretation of Jimi Hendrix 's famous improvisation on The Star-Spangled Banner . The German cabaret artist Matthias Deutschmann had previously performed such a solo interpretation on the cello. Haimovitz was the very first musician on the classical music scene to give a live concert at the punk music club CBGB in Manhattan. The appearance was recorded by ABC News for their show Nightline UpClose and broadcast on US television.
In 1999, Haimovitz and his wife founded their own record label Oxingale Records in Montreal , where they released their own recordings and those of other artists.
Until 2004, Haimovitz taught at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst , at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University in Montreal and at the Domaine Forget Academy, near Québec .
