Bat Jam , also Bat Yam ( Hebrew בת ים'Daughter of the sea'; Arabic بات يام), is a city in Israel in the southern Tel Aviv area on the Mediterranean Sea .
history
The settlement from which Bat Jam developed was founded in 1926 south of Jaffa by settlers from Tel Aviv. The place got its current name in 1937, before it was called Bajit vaGan ("House and Garden"). Until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Bat Jam - like the neighboring Cholon - developed only slowly because it was located away from the Jewish settlement areas and was therefore increasingly exposed to Arab attacks. In 1958, Bat Jam received city government status .
In the meantime, Bat Jam has developed into one of the largest settlements in the Tel Aviv area. The place is known u. a. because of its beautiful sandy beaches. A promenade and many hotels were built along the sea. The city is part of the Gush Dan metropolitan area .
