The band released their first album after just three gigs on the Fresh Sound label . After performing at Village Vanguard , Columbia Records signed the trio in 2002. Here they released their album These Are the Vistas in 2003, Give in 2004 , and Suspicious Activity? . The trio then left Columbia and signed a contract with Heads Up Records, where the album Prog was released in May 2007 and the album For All I Care in February 2009 . The trio then switched to eOne Music . Never Stop (2010) and Made Possible (2012) have appeared here so far .

Stylistically, The Bad Plus combine elements of avant-garde jazz with rock and pop elements . In her words, they are influenced by Stravinsky to Ornette Coleman . Her oeuvre is mainly characterized by idiosyncratic interpretations of well-known rock pieces, which make up around 20 percent of the repertoire. The trio has processed numerous pieces by other bands, such as Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana , David Bowie's Life on Mars? or Aphex Twins Flim .
With 170 concerts a year (2006) they have an impressive tour presence. They are also increasingly trying to capture the live mood on recordings. According to their homepage, their concerts are played with the precision of Swiss clocks, but at the same time offer the full range of dynamics and venture out of musical habits.
All three musicians compose and contribute to the repertoire. According to Iverson's music, it is more intellectual and complex, Anderson's more melodic and romantic, and King's compositions have a more rhythmic and surreal approach. The intimacy of the trio at times reaches the level of classic role models such as Bill Evans or Keith Jarrett with standard pieces. According to the critic Ben Ratliff of the New York Times , the band is better than anyone else in the mix of "post-'60s jazz and indie rock."
Ethan Iverson's playing is characterized by a high level of virtuosity, which is however performed with great restraint. Drummer Dave King is given significantly more freedom for spontaneous expression, while bassist Reid Anderson interprets his task more as a rhythmic and harmonic foundation of the trio and less as virtuoso self-development.
In 2011 they played together with the hr big band ; In 2012 they performed at the Newport Jazz Festival with Bill Frisell .
