Herman Riley

Herman Riley (born August 31, 1933 in Algiers , Louisiana , † April 14, 2007 in Los Angeles ) was an American jazz musician ( tenor saxophone , flute ) who was mainly active in the Los Angeles area.

Live and act

Riley played with local groups in New Orleans when he was a teenager; after completing his military service (1955-57) he attended San Diego City College. In the early 1960s, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked from the middle of the decade a. a. played with Della Reese and Richard Boone and was a member of the Bobby Bryant Sextet for several years . In the following decade he worked with Bobby Hutcherson , from 1972 in New York with Gene Ammons and Blue Mitchell . During this time he also played as a session musician with Cal Tjader , Lorez Alexandria , Ernie Andrews , John Handy , Frank Capp and Joe Sample . In the early 1980s he was a member of the Lionel Hampton Orchestra.

In 1984 he released the album Heman under his own name , on which Ron Eschete , Milcho Leviev , John B. Williams and Paul Humphrey participated. In the field of jazz he was involved in 77 recording sessions between 1966 and 2006, including a. in later years also with Stacy Rowles , Mercer Ellington , Maxine Sullivan , Jeannie Cheatham , Jimmy Smith and Ernestine Anderson . Shortly before his death, in 2006 Yoshi’s last recordings in the band of Kenny Burrell were made .
