Jeannie Cheatham
Jeannie Cheatham (born August 14, 1937 in Akron , Ohio as Jean E. Evans ) is an American R&B and jazz singer , pianist, keyboardist and arranger.

Jeannie Cheatham comes from a musical family, sang in the gospel choir at the age of five and completed classical piano training from the age of six. At the age of 15 she switched to jazz. Her first professional job was at Big Mama Thornton . In the 1950s she played in the house bands of clubs and accompanied a. a. vocalists Al Hibbler , Dakota Staton , Jimmy Rushing , T-Bone Walker , Dinah Washington , Jimmy Witherspoon and Joe Williams . In 1961 she married trombonist Jimmy Cheatham . Both then lived in New York and Wisconsin , where they taught at the University of Wisconsin . In 1978 the couple moved to San Diego .
In 1984 Jeannie Cheatham and her husband formed the Sweet Baby Blues Band (also The Cheathams ), which played in the style of rhythm and blues and Kansas City jazz . She also started singing in the band. One of their well-known tracks was "Meet Me with Your Black Drawers On". Jeannie Cheatham also toured with Cab Calloway . She has performed at international jazz festivals such as Nice , the North Sea Jazz Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival .
The Cheathams then recorded for Concord Jazz from 1984 . Contributing musicians were u. a. Snooky Young , Curtis Peagler , Red Callender , Plas Johnson , Frank Wess , Rickey Woodard , Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson , Hank Crawford , Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis , Papa John Creach and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown . Jeannie Cheatham was a guest on Marian McPartland's radio show Piano Jazz in 1990 . In 1993 she appeared on George Lewis ' album Changing with the Times . In 2006 she published her autobiography .
Jeannie Cheatham has received multiple critical awards from Down Beat and Jazz Times . From 1984 to 1991 she received the Popular Music Award from ASCAP .
