Paul Humphrey

Paul Nelson Humphrey (born October 10, 1935 in Detroit , Michigan) is an American jazz drummer who was also active in funk and rhythm and blues .

Live and act

Humphrey took piano lessons from the age of eight and then switched to drums. He received training at the Naval Academy and worked after his military service with Wes Montgomery (1961–1962). Then he played with Les McCann , Kai Winding , Charles Mingus , Lee Konitz , John Coltrane and Gene Ammons .

In the late 1960s, he moved to Los Angeles , where he worked with Harry Edison and in the studios. As a band leader, he released under the name Paul Humphrey and the Cool Aid Chemists , together with Clarence MacDonald, David T. Walker and Phil Upchurch . In 1971 the group achieved two chart successes. Cool Aid reached number 29 on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 14 in the US Black Singles. Funky LA reached number 45 on the US Black Singles chart. He also recorded an album in 1981 with his Paul Humphrey Sextet .

Humphrey played drums on Marvin Gaye's album Let's Get It On .

As a studio musician, he has worked with artists as diverse as Burt Bacharach , Nelson Riddle , Sammy Davis Jr. , Steely Dan , Frank Zappa , Jimmy Smith , The Four Tops , Al Kooper , Jackie DeShannon , Natalie Cole , Albert King , Quincy Jones , Dusty Springfield , Jean-Luc Ponty , Michael Franks , Maria Muldaur or Marc Bolan .

Humphrey was also a drummer for the Lawrence Welk Orchestra and the Lawrence Welk Show from 1976 to 1982 . He and his wife, Joan, have two children, Pier and Damien, who appeared with their father on the annual Christmas episode of the Welk Show .
