Discovery Records is an American rhythm and blues and jazz record label that was founded in 1948 by Albert Marx .

The jazz fan, impresario and promoter Albert Marx founded the short-lived Guild label in New York City in 1945 and made recordings with Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker (" Salt Peanuts "). After the end of the Guid company , Marx took over the classical music label Musicraft and continued it as a jazz label with artists such as Gillespie and Sarah Vaughan . In 1946 Mel Tormé signed a record deal with Musicraft ; In November 1946, the recordings of Torme and his Mel-Tones were made with the Artie Shaw Orchestra.

Marx soon moved the headquarters of his new Discovery Records label, founded in New York in 1948, to Hollywood ; one of the company's first productions was Mary Ann McCall's single "I Hadn't Anyone Till You" / "You're Mine, You". Marx then recorded artists such as Roy Eldridge , Zoot Sims , Don Byas , Gil Fuller , Hampton Hawes , Art Pepper , Eddie Bert and the Red Norvo Trio with Tal Farlow and Charlie Mingus . The music of European jazz musicians such as Hans Koller / Jutta Hipp , Rolf Ericson , Ove Lind , George Shearing and the Melody Maker All-Stars was also published on Discovery . Marx later took over the back catalogs of Musicraft Records and Trend Records and published them on his label. After the financial end of the "first" Discovery label in the late 1950s, many of the recordings were taken over by Savoy Records . One of the last releases was the December 1958 album Gongs East by the Chico Hamilton Quintet with Eric Dolphy .

In 1950, Discovery's productions focused on modern jazz as well as the incipient success of rhythm & blues in southern California; Marx then published artists such as Barbara Carroll , Damita Jo, and Helen Humes on Discovery . Humes' tracks "Rock Me To Sleep" and "Sad Feeling", which she recorded with the Marshall Royal Combo, reached # 519 in the charts in June 1950. Other R&B artists from Discovery were Claude “Mighty Man” Maxwell with Eddie Williams and his orchestra (“Goodnight Irene” / “I Feel Like Shouting”). In November 1950, Dizzy Gillespie recorded records with the Johnny Richards Orchestra for the label. In December 1950, Discovery released its first 45 rpm single, Helen Humes with "E-Baba-Le-Ba" and "One Hour Tonight," which hit the charts at # 530. In April 1951, Helen Hume recorded "Helen's Advice" / "Airplane Blues" with the young Dexter Gordon .

With his revived second Discovery label, Albert Marx released a few more albums in the 1980s, such as Joe Pass , Shelly Manne ( plays Richard Rodgers ' musical "Rex" ), Teddy Wilson , Eugenio Toussaint and Gordon Brisker . His heirs sold the label Discovery, Trend and Musicraft in 1991 to Jac Holzman , who continued it in a new label; In 1993 Discovery Records was taken over by the Warner Music Group and in 1996 integrated into Sire Records .
