M. Ward (born October 4, 1973 in Ventura County , California ; actually Matthew Stephen Ward ) is an American guitarist and singer-songwriter who lives in Portland , Oregon . His music is assigned to the genre of alternative country .

music

M. Ward sees himself primarily as a guitarist. His voice is only an "accompaniment" to the guitar. His albums often feature purely instrumental pieces, on Transistor Radio, for example, interpretations of such diverse pieces as You Still Believe in Me ( Beach Boys ) or the Well-Tempered Clavier by J. S. Bachs . The Folksongs Wards are influenced by styles such as blues , rock and jazz , which represents the multitude of musical role models of the artist. The LoFi sound of his albums is entirely intentional, and can give the impression that Ward's music is already several decades old.

history

Initially, M. Ward belonged to the three-piece California band Rodriguez, which released an album produced by Grandaddy singer Jason Lytle. After Rodriguez split up, Ward began his solo career, supported by Howe Yellow from Giant Sand . Yellow was enthusiastic about a demo tape by M. Ward and made it possible for him to release his debut Duet for Guitars # 2 on his Ow-Om label in 2000 . This album was already available in Europe, thanks to Gelbs popularity, where the EP Scene from # 12 was also released.

His second album, End of Amnesia , a concept album with the theme “Memories and Dreams”, inspired by David Lynch's films, among others , was released the following year, but like its predecessor, it had only moderate success with audiences. A significant increase in his popularity meant for Ward to support the tour of Conor Oberst ( Bright Eyes ).

In April 2003, Ward's third album, Transfiguration of Vincent, was released on Merge Records and thus for the first time on a slightly larger label (in Europe on Matador ). The barely recognizable cover version of David Bowie's hit Let's Dance received special attention .

In the following years Ward gave many live performances, in addition to his solo concerts he was on tour with Bright Eyes , the English songwriter Beth Orton and the band My Morning Jacket . He also worked on his next album, Transistor Radio , which was released in early 2005 and pays homage to the early days of radio. Many artist friends worked on this album, including Vic Chesnutt , Howe Gelb and band members of PJ Harvey and Rilo Kiley .

In 2007 Ward appeared in several cities (including Germany) as support for Norah Jones .

His latest project is a collaboration with actress Zooey Deschanel . The album Volume One was released under the name She & Him in March 2008 and Volume Two in April 2010 . Volume 3 followed in May 2013 .
