Mônica Vasconcelos

Mônica Vasconcelos (born November 13, 1966 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian jazz singer and radio presenter.

Act

Vasconcelos began her musical career in the clubs of her hometown. After moving to London in 1992, she continued to sing and formed her band Nóis in 1994 . In addition to the Brazilian guitarist Ife Tolentino, she was supported by British jazz musicians such as keyboardist Steve Lodder and trombonist Paul Nieman . In addition, she interpreted the repertoire of the Música Popular Brasileira with groups such as Viramundo or As Meninas . As a singer, she appeared at many well-known festivals such as WOMAD and the JazzFest Berlin , and since 1997 she has released seven albums under her own name. Her album São Paulo Tapes , produced by Robert Wyatt , features songs written by songwriters such as Chico Buarque , João Bosco , Ivan Lins and Caetano Veloso during the Brazilian military dictatorship between 1964 and 1985 . She was also a guest (alongside Lenine , Zélia Duncaan , Ney Matogrosso and Joyce ) on Alberto Rosenblit's album De Bem Com a Vida .

As editor and presenter for the BBC World Service , Vasconcelos produced radio programs on the history of the Música Popular Brasileira. In 2014 she won gold at the New York Festivals International Radio Program Awards for her documentary The Secret History of Bossa Nova , which she presented on BBC Radio 4 in 2013 .
