Career
Melba Moore's career began in 1967 with the role of Sheila in Off-Broadway - and from 1968 in Broadway production of the musical Hair . In 1970 she won a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical for her role as Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jankins in Purlie . In 1978 she performed alongside Eartha Kitt as Marsinah in Timbuktu! on.
Together with Clifton Davis , she hosted her own television show in 1972. From the mid-1970s, Moore also had success with their records. Her debut album, I Got Love , earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Newcomer in 1970 ; In 1976 she was also nominated for a Grammy in the category “ Best Female R&B Vocal Performance ” for her recording Lean On Me - in which she holds a note for 35 seconds . Other hits included This Is It (1976), You Stepped Into My Life (1978), Love's Comin 'at Ya (1982), Read My Lips (1985) and Falling (1987). Her duets A Little Bit More (1986) and I Can't Complain (1988) with R&B singer Freddie Jackson were also very successful .
1979 Moore got a small role in the film adaptation of Hair ; In 1986 she starred for a season on her own sitcom Melba , which was canceled after a few episodes.
In 1990 Moore recorded the song Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing with other African American artists such as Anita Baker , Dionne Warwick and Stevie Wonder , the song of the African American civil rights activists . Not least because of this publication, the song was recognized in Congressional Records , the official journal of the US Congress as the official national anthem of African Americans.
In the 2000s, Moore turned to gospel music. Occasionally she continues to appear on Broadway shows. In 2003 she starred in the film Fighting Temptations on the side of Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Beyoncé Knowles .
