reception
According to John Sharpe, who reviewed the album on All About Jazz , in this chamber ensemble the three musicians acted as interlocking pieces in a mysterious puzzle that represents an abstract area that is not easy to analyze. Although each of the six pieces is attributed to Shipp as the composer, the eventful results could easily be counted as improvisations, as they are full of dramatic gestures, weird overlaps, and unpredictable rejoinder. William Parker's sturdy pizzicato and fleeting cyclical figures form a strong foundation that helps solidify the fleeting interactions, Sharpe said. “In contrast, Maneri's sharp astringency and microtonal dives give the discourse a cerebral atmosphere, while Shipp triangulates between the two, balancing out the asceticism, but also avoiding too long to settle into a pattern. Each cut represents an ongoing recalibration, with constantly different flavors and moods appearing. ”One of the most striking is the final piece,“ Law of Sequence ”, in which an anthem-like celebration gives way to a hopeful mood and an ultimately emphatic and uplifting conclusion .
S. Victor Aaron wrote in Something Else! , In six new Shipp compositions, the trio tackle the prepared material with the caprice of spontaneous composition and use the telepathy that comes from decades of working together to control the flow of the melody in unison. There is almost “a chamber music precision in the way the density of the sound swells and falls, and the ease with which the lead and comping roles are passed on to one another.” A casual glance at the album's title could lead to one reads it as a Symbiotic Reality and not as a Symbolic Reality . "However, a dedicated listening will convince you that this should be the real name of the album."
