Ernsee is located about 300 meters above sea level on a plateau that is bordered in the east by the valley of the White Elster (in which the city of Gera extends), in the north by the Erlbach valley and in the south / southwest by the Saarbachtal. The place forms the center of a clearing island in the Gera city forest , which opens to the Saarbachtal.

history

Ernsee was first mentioned as Irnse on March 25, 1397 : A Peczolt von Irnse is mentioned as a witness in a document from Heinrich Reuss zu Plauen. In 1533 the place is mentioned as insects ; the meaning of the name is unclear. Ferdinand Hahn considers a pre-Christian place of worship for the goddess Herth or Isis at this point as eponymous possible. On the western slope of the Lessengraben north of Ernsee, the tower hill of a lost castle can still be seen, a so-called desert . An earlier connection to the church of today's deserted Pottendorf (north-west of Ernsee) cannot be ruled out, but cannot be documented.

The origin of the place is very likely to be seen in connection with Osterstein Castle , the Ernsee Chamber Estate, which can be traced for several centuries, served to supply the castle, especially sheep breeding. In 1827 the place includes a stately farm, a sheep farm, a forestry, 15 houses and 85 residents.

Ernsee parish, buried and schooled traditionally to Frankenthal - whereby the schooling place of the parish Frankenthal was Scheubengrobsdorf from about 1600 , here the children from the parish, i. H. also taught from Ernsee and Scheubengrobsdorf, Windischenbernsdorf and Töppeln . In the 19th century, these places gradually got their own schools, Ernsee trained in Untermhaus .

Due to its good location, a lung sanatorium was built in Ernsee around 1900 ; Completely renovated in 1927/28, it existed until 1997.

On October 1, 1922, Ernsee was established in the course of the new Thuringian district division law - in the state of Thuringia , which had existed since 1920, the districts were formed in 1922 as they existed until 1952; Gera was given district freedom - incorporated into the city of Gera. Around 1930, the Hammelburg settlement was built northeast of the town on the road to Untermhaus .

In 1943 the “ thief's oak ” at the intersection of Ernsee- Töppeln - Rubitz had to be felled; its age was estimated at 550 to 560 years. It owes its name to the fact that it has been a meeting and gathering point for marauding robber gangs over the centuries.

In 1947 a children's rest home was set up in a former inn; Today the Gera children's and youth home is located in this complex.
