history

According to the sources, Großaga is a German follow-up to the older Sorbian settlement of Kleinaga. The oldest known documentary mention found it in 1248 with a Heinricus de Ogau , belonging to the knighthood of the Reuss junior line . In later documents the place is found as Grossen Agow (1364), Agowe (ditto), Agaw (1518), great agaw or major agaw (1533). In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the spellings Groß Agau and Groß Aga are also common.

Aga Castle was located on the site of the former chamber property. Slits in the cellar of the southern front of the property are still preserved. A moat with a drawbridge protected the extended facility. In 1259 a Heinrich von Aga is notarized in a document of the burgrave of Kirchberg. Until 1712 the place was a knight's seat, the last lord on Großaga is Hans Friedrich von Wolframsdorf . In 1715 Heinrich XIII. Reuss the completely indebted property from the heirs, from now on it is Russian chamber property.

Over the centuries, Großaga was also the parish for Kleinaga, Lessen and Reichenbach, and later also for Seligenstädt. Since 2003 it has been the parish vicarie of the Evangelical Parish of Langenberg . The parish of Großaga used to have annual market rights, which also included sermons of indulgence, so that the name "Agaischer Ablassmarkt" (Appelsmarkt) was coined for this market . He was widely known, but even if a hallway was named Tetzelscher Markt until 1870 , there is no evidence of an appearance by this infamous indulgence preacher in Aga. In addition, because of the long-standing adherence to the Catholic faith of the manor owner at the time, Krieg von Etzdorf Aga was the last community in the Russian region to be reformed according to Lutheran principles. In the end, Aga could not hold its own against the markets of the surrounding larger towns and cities of Gera , Langenberg and Zeitz .

After devastating fires, the parishes of the parish of Großaga acquired a joint fire engine as early as 1812. In 1922 a cinema was set up in Henschel's inn.

Under his last tenant before the expropriation in 1945, the Großaga estate, which has meanwhile been merged with the Kleinaga estate, becomes a model economy for seed and livestock farming. From 1945 to 1990 it was run as a people's own property (VEG), and ditto it received high government awards from the GDR . In addition to the estate, several other large farms had established themselves over the centuries; they are summarized as LPG in GDR times .

On July 1, 1950, Großaga, Kleinaga, Lessen, Reichenbach and Seligenstädt formed the new municipality of Aga, which was incorporated into Gera on April 1, 1994.

Since the reprivatisation in 1990, there have been two large farms that have farmed in and around Großaga on their own and on reprivatised leased land. Some farms have now been carefully renovated, others torn down or left to decay.
