geology

Above the railway line is the so-called Schiefergasse , which, with its huge, clearly visible layers of rock, is a geological attraction around the world. It is one of the most important geological outcrops from the Permian 255 million years ago, when the region formed the edge of the Zechstein Sea on the undivided supercontinent of Pangea . The Schiefergasse is a profile from Rotliegendem over Zechstein conglomerate and copper slate to the product bank. The first descriptions come from the Thieschitzer pastor Eduard Mackrodt from 1840 .

The small dwarf cave is located in the same formation , clearly visible from the road in the direction of Gera.

history

There are two explanations for the name of the place: the first assumes the origin of Mel (rubble, garbage) in the sense of the sediment deposits on the Elsterufer, the second the patronymic origin of a Sorbian town founder Mil in question - therefore Milvice is a clan of Mil .

Milwicz was first mentioned in a document on November 12, 1322: The bailiffs of Gera confirmed the purchase of fields in the district to the Cronschwitz monastery . In 1506 Boniface von Schaurodt acquired the village for 400 Rhenish guilders . Later the village Milbitz went to the rule Reuss over, was with his then seven farmsteads the Kammergut in Ernsee subject to forced labor and was not the country jurisdiction, unlike the surrounding villages, but directly the Reuss jurisdiction. From 1659 the horse estates in Milbitz were obliged to provide carriage services for the Russians. The responsible parish and school location was the neighboring Thieschitz .

The old French bridge over the White Elster

In 1918 an open-air theater ( Reussisches Waldtheater Heldendank ) with 1,500 seats was inaugurated above the road from Milbitz to Untermhaus . Its income initially went to the war blind. It had to be closed in 1934 for financial reasons, the wooden superstructures fell into disrepair. Located in the forest above the village, the Milbitzer Heilanstalten , a foundation of the Gera entrepreneurial family Louis Schlutter, was handed over to its destination on November 11, 1899 . Expanded in 1927, the hospital served as a military hospital during World War II and, after 1945, as the on-site hospital for the Soviet armed forces in Gera. Today the buildings are unused and left to decay.

Regarding the district name Am Weinberg : In earlier times, the vineyards of the Reussian rule were located here, but their cultivation has been discontinued over the years - probably for good reason: Ferdinand Hahn indicates the quality of the local wine in his story of Gera and the surrounding area on: Wine grows well there, who likes to drink vinegar!

Milbitz was incorporated into the city of Gera on January 1, 1919.

The floods of 1954, 1981 and again the floods of 2013 caused severe damage to the town .

traffic

  • The White Elster spans the Franzosenbrücke in Milbitz : Probably at this point soldiers had already crossed the White Elster during the Napoleonic Wars ; However, its name is based on the fact that the first wooden bridge was built by French prisoners of war housed in Tinz Castle on the other side of the Elster during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71.

From 1926 to 2011 the bridge was a graceful steel construction. This - originally built as a railway bridge at Zwötzen at the end of the 19th century - was dismantled in 1926, as the increasing traffic there required a larger bridge and implemented as a replacement for the dilapidated predecessor building for the Elsterquerung near Milbitz. It was no longer capable of renovation and was demolished in autumn 2011; An upgrading was carried out on the old foundations. This third French bridge was opened to traffic on October 2, 2012.
