Statistical breakdown of the city of Gera with districts and parts of the municipality

The urban area of Geras is divided into a total of 40  districts , some of which consist of several residential areas . These are mostly formerly independent communities that have been incorporated into Gera in the course of history. The districts are grouped into 12 statistical districts, each with several districts. The urban area of Gera consists of 72 municipal parts. Each part of the municipality has a three-digit number, each statistical district a two-digit number.
Some districts are also a district (until II / 2009 locality) or form a common district with other districts within the meaning of § 45 of the Thuringian Local Authority (ThürKO), i.e. H. these districts have a local council elected by the people (until II / 2009 local council) with a local mayor (until II / 2009 local mayor) as chairman. The district councils are to be heard on important matters relating to the district; they have the right to information and advice as well as the unconditional right to speak in the city council and the committees. Above all, however, as a kind of hybrid between elected representatives and municipal administration, they are on-site contacts for citizens. In addition, they receive an annual local flat rate from the municipal budget based on the number of inhabitants in the district for self-determined support of cultural and social tasks.

The districts are defined in the main statute of the city of Gera. Upon a justified request to the city council, districts without a district constitution can also be awarded these and thus become districts with the corresponding municipal rights. According to the main statute of June 1, 2014 Gera has 17 districts with district constitution.
