John McGahern
John McGahern (born November 12, 1934 in Dublin , † March 30, 2006 ibid) was an Irish writer . His books are written in English. Some of his works have been translated into German.
Life
McGahern was born in Dublin in 1934 but spent his childhood in the country; first in Leitrim and after the death of his mother with his father in Roscommon . After graduating from high school, he studied elementary education at St Patrick's College of Education in Drumcondra / Dublin. He then taught at a primary school for a few years until he was released; he was accused of authoring pornography . His experience as a teacher in his novel The Taking Leave (dt. Farewells ) incorporated.
McGahern lived abroad for a couple of years before returning to Leitrim. He worked as a farmer and continued creative writing. Among other novels he wrote Amongst Women and That They May Face the Rising Sun , for which he received the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award in 2002 and which was named Irish Novel of the Year in 2003. Three of his books were banned by the Catholic Church : The Dark , The Leavetaking , The Pornographer (in German: The Lover ). He has also published many short stories.
McGahern has worked as a university lecturer at various universities; from 1981 to 2006 as a lecturer in English at Colgate University , NY , USA.
He died of cancer in Dublin in 2006 at the age of 71 and was buried next to his mother in Leitrim.
