Nick Knight (* 1958 in London ) is a British fashion and documentary photographer and founder of the fashion website showstudio.com .

Life

Knight studied photography at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design , graduating with honors in 1982. In the same year the book was published Skinhead that the skinhead - subculture of the late 1960s to the early 1980s in England dedicated and next to the texts of the sociologist Dick Hebdige the history and fashion of the skinhead culture also includes an extensive photo section with pictures Knights. For this publication the photographer received the 1985 Designers and Art Directors Award for the best book cover .

Terry Jones, editor of the fashion magazine iD and formerly Art Director for the British edition of Vogue , then commissioned Knight to create a series of 100 portraits to mark the fifth anniversary of his magazine. Knight's well-known works were of a social documentary nature to date, but this commission enabled him to get into fashion photography. Since then, Knight has worked with numerous fashion designers and companies, including Yohji Yamamoto , Alexander McQueen , Calvin Klein , Christian Dior , Jil Sander , Chloé and Yves Saint Laurent . He also worked as a photographer for Lancôme , Levi Strauss , Mercedes-Benz , D. Swarovski , the Royal Ballet and the Royal Opera House, among others .

Nick Knight has also been responsible for the photographic work on various covers for music releases since 1983. He shot the cover photos for albums by Björk , Morrissey , Elvis Costello , Boy George , David Bowie , Kylie Minogue , The Style Council , Lady Gaga , Paul Weller , Gwen Stefani , Cheryl Cole , Seal , ABC , George Michael , Massive Attack and many other artists.

Knight directed the music videos of Björk's Pagean Poetry (2001), Lady Gaga's Born This Way (2011) and Kanye West's Bound 2 (2013).

In 2000, Knight founded showstudio.com, his own fashion website, with the aim of providing a multimedia platform for presenting fashion beyond print magazines, audiovisually and in motion on the Internet.
