Sandra Knapp
Sandra Diane Knapp , also Sandy (born December 9, 1956 ) is an American botanist . Her areas of interest are different groups of the nightshade ( Solanum ), but also other taxa of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), such as the tobacco genus ( Nicotiana ), the Anthocercidae and the Juanulloeae, as well as the nightshade family of Mesoamerica . Life and research
In 1986 she received her PhD from Cornell University . Since 1992 she has been working at the Natural History Museum , where she is working on the creation of the “Flora Mesoamerica”. She is also one of the "Principal Investigators" of the PBI Solanum project, which is creating a modern treatment of the nightshade genus over a project period of five years (January 2004 - December 2008). In May 2010 Knapp published the first descriptions of four species of the nightshade genus ( Solanum aspersum , Solanum luculentum , Solanum sanchez-vegae and Solanum sousae ) in the online journal "PLoS ONE" and thus the first botanical first descriptions that were not in conventional, printed Literature appeared
Knapp is a member of the Council of Fauna and Flora International, the Linnean Society of London , whose Linné Medal she received in 2016, the Organization Pro-Flora Neotropica, the International Association of Plant Taxonomy and the Tropical Biology Association. She is co-editor of various scientific magazines, such as "BMC Evolutionary Biology", "Taxon", "Oryx" and "Systematics and Biodiversity". She is also a member of the "Faculty of 1000". In 2018 Knapp was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
