Johann Friedrich Breier (born May 14, 1813 in Eutin ; † August 24, 1880 in Lübeck ) was a German theologian, classical philologist and director of the Katharineum in Lübeck .

Life

After attending grammar school in Eutin and graduating from the Katharineum, Breier went to the University of Berlin in 1836 , where he enrolled in Protestant theology, but mainly studied classical philology. In 1838 he moved to the University of Bonn . In 1840 he became a collaborator at the old grammar school in Oldenburg and in 1843 rector of the newly founded town school in Oldenburg.

In July 1854, the council of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck appointed him to succeed Johann Friedrich Jacob as director of the Katharineum. During his time as director he promoted gymnastics like his predecessor and made it mandatory for the lower classes in 1864. Even during his time in Oldenburg, he advocated the then new sports pedagogy by Adolf Spieß . All in all, the militarization of the humanistic educational ideal of the school began during his time , which Thomas Mann endured a little later under Breier's successor and targeted in the Buddenbrooks school chapter .

Breier was married to Margaritha Thormann (1817–1879) from an old Bern family. Their daughter Marie (1843–1919) married Paul Kramer in 1872 .
