Gerhard Pahl (born June 25, 1925 in Berlin ; † October 18, 2015 in Darmstadt ) was a German mechanical engineer and design scientist. From 1965 to 1990 he was a professor in the mechanical engineering department at the Technical University of Darmstadt .

Life

Gerhard Pahl was born as the son of August and Martha Pahl, née Dreyer, on June 25, 1925 in Berlin. After serving in the Second World War and then being a prisoner of war in the United States , in October 1946 he was one of the first 40 to study mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt, which was still known at the time. In 1951, Pahl graduated with a degree in engineering and received his doctorate in 1955 with a dissertation on investigations of open rings as safety elements in mechanical engineering . From 1955 to 1964 he worked for the electronics group Brown, Boveri & Cie in Mannheim as a test engineer , designer and development manager, primarily in the development area of turbine and flow machine construction . In 1964, Pahl was appointed to the chair for machine elements at his old university and, although not yet in office, was already accepted into the circle of his colleagues. In 1965 he followed the call of the TH Darmstadt as a full professor for machine elements and design , where he taught and researched until his retirement in 1990. His teaching and research focus included the design process including computer-aided design (he recognized the possibilities of CAD early on, wrote the book Constructing with 3D CAD systems about it ), safety and cost issues, series and modular systems as well as psychological analyzes of human creativity . Pahl's pioneering work, especially on construction theory, had a major influence on progress in the engineering sciences and earned him professional recognition as well as an international reputation .

His Handbook of Construction , which he wrote in 1977 together with Wolfgang Beitz, and its numerous new editions are still considered a standard work and has been translated into seven languages. In 1974, Pahl co-founded the Scientific Society for Product Development, for which he initially made himself available as Vice President and then as President. He was also involved in science policy ; from 1978 to 1984 he held the positions of Vice President of the German Research Foundation and Chairman of the Committee for Applied Research. From 1980 to 1986 he was also a member of the Senate of the Fraunhofer Society . In December 1984 Pahl was one of the actors in a founding commission of the (West) Berlin Academy of Sciences , of which he was a member until it was closed in 1991 due to German reunification . The successor organization, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences , elected him as an extraordinary member in 1994. From 1988 to 1998 he worked on the advisory committee of the Daimler-Benz group in Ladenburg and from 1992 to 1998 as its committee chairman. Pahl's international reputation as a scientist attests to his numerous awards, such as the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class , the DECHEMA Medal , the Gold Medal of Honor from the Association of German Engineers (VDI) and the Erasmus Kittler Medal from the Technical University of Darmstadt. His exceptional status as a researcher is proven by the honorary doctorates awarded to him by the Technical University of Munich , the Tongji University of Shanghai (China), where he also taught as an honorary professor in 1984 , the University of the Chemical Industry Veszprém (Hungary) and most recently, in 1993, the Technical University of Berlin .

Shortly after turning 90, Gerhard Pahl died on October 18, 2015, leaving behind his wife and two children, a son and a daughter.

In June 2017, the new building for the teaching center in the mechanical engineering department of the Technical University of Darmstadt was named after Gerhard Pahl.
