Ferdinand Gottlob Schichau (* thirtieth January 1814 in Elbing , West Prussia (now Elblag); † 23. January 1896 ) was a German mechanical engineering - engineering , entrepreneur and founder of Schichau works .

Life

Schichau studied engineering at the Berlin Trade Academy . After studying in Great Britain and the Rhineland , he returned to Elbing. There he founded the Schichau-Werke in 1837 , which, as a mechanical engineering company, manufactured hydraulic machines, excavators and locomotives . The Borussia , equipped with a steam engine produced by Schichau, was Germany's first propeller-driven ship in 1855 . Schichau also built extensive workers' settlements in Elbing .

In 1872 he built the Elbinger Schichau shipyard . In 1889 Schichau built a repair yard in Pillau , the seaport of Königsberg i. Pr. Due to the good order situation, another large shipyard was built in Gdansk in 1890 , the Gdansk Schichau shipyard . Schichau could also build and maintain larger ships there, for which the port of Elbing would not have been deep enough.

In 1894 Ferdinand Schichau was awarded the Grashof Memorial Medal from the Association of German Engineers .

Schichau died a week before his 82nd birthday, his son-in-law Carl Ziese continued to run the company.

The shipyard employees erected a memorial in front of the main building in Elbing with the inscription: “YOUR DEAR CHEF. THE OFFICIALS AND WORKERS ". The monument created by the Berlin sculptor Wilhelm Haverkamp was inaugurated on November 18, 1900. The Schichau statue is on a high pedestal, on the left of the pedestal a standing worker with a hammer on his shoulder hands him a laurel wreath , on the right sits the muse Klio with a model of the Borussia ship in her hand. The Klio figure was included as a logo in the letterhead of the Society of Friends and Patrons of the Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute .
