The Borussia , built in 1855, was the first iron deep-sea steamer built in Prussia with a screw drive .

Construction and technical data

The ship was launched on 21 June 1855 at Schichau in Elblag for Elbinger Reeder Georg Grunau from the stack , namely sideways into the specially depressed for this purpose Aschhofgraben. The shipbuilder Gustav Fechter was in charge of construction. The 40 m long hull was made of half-inch steel plates. When fully loaded, the ship had a draft of 2.5 m . The Borussia had a novelty for its time, a deck crane . The steam engine manufactured by Schichau had an output of 60 hp , and the ship reached a speed of 10 knots during the test drives on the Elbing River .

history

After the end of the test drives, the Borussia ran out on October 28, 1855 with a load of copper and bristles on its first trading voyage, from Königsberg via Pillau to London , where it arrived on November 4th after a journey time of 160 hours. The Borussia was later sold to a Königsberg shipping company, for which it operated until 1874.

She sank in 1874 after a collision with the Sirius at Jershöft in Western Pomerania ( approximate position ).
