Herzogenhorn

The Herzogenhorn is a 1415.6  m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the southern Black Forest . It is located in the municipality of Bernau in the Black Forest in the district of Waldshut and is part of the Feldberg nature reserve .

Location and surroundings

The Herzogenhorn is the highest elevation of the field mountain south adjacent, contiguous Berg group whose most famous peak the Spießhorn ( 1350.8  m above sea level. NHN ) and Silberberg ( 1358.9  m above sea level. NHN ) are. The Krunkelbach and the Kriegsbach, which flow eastwards to the Menzenschwander Alb , rise on its slopes, and the Bernauer Alb to the south, as well as the Prägbach , which flows into the meadow after a wide curve .

height

The Herzogenhorn is considered the second highest mountain in the Black Forest after the Feldberg . If the Feldberg secondary peaks Seebuck and Baldenweger Buck are counted despite their low notch height , the Herzogenhorn is only the third or fourth highest elevation in the Black Forest.

Routes to the summit

There is an extensive network of hiking trails on the Herzogenhorn . The mountain is usually climbed from Bernau, from Menzenschwand (for example over the Spießhorn ) or from the Feldbergpass over the Grafenmatt . The two mountain ranges from the Herzogenhorn to the south, in the direction of St. Blasien and to the west, over the Bernauer Kreuz to the Hasenhorn near Todtnau are popular hiking areas. At the northeastern edge of the summit there is a Wechtenkessel with an avalanche path. In 2015, a woman was buried by an avalanche on a ski tour on the Herzogenhorn and died in the process.

When the weather is fine, the Herzogenhorn offers a panoramic view of the Alpine chain from the Zugspitze in the southeast to Mont Blanc in the southwest, from the Feldberg to the north and the Belchen to the west. In the west , the Vosges can be seen across the Rhine plain . The characteristic high summit cross of the Herzogenhorn can be reached on foot in about 75 minutes from the Feldberg Pass.

Gastronomically, the Herzogenhorn is developed through the Bundesleistungszentrum Herzogenhorn, a training center for high-performance athletes with an adjoining inn to the north and the Krunkelbachhütte southeast of the summit.

history

In a scroll from 1328, “des herzog horne” is already mentioned as a point on the border with the St. Blasien monastery . The first primitive fortresses are said to date from the time around the Thirty Years War , while the commissioning of the actual hill on the mountain is attributed to Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm , the Turkic Louis . In 1904 the Mannheim section of the Black Forest Association built the Mannheimer-Ludwigshafener Hütte, but it burned down on January 28, 1911. The Gasthaus Herzogenhorn was acquired by the Black Forest Ski Association in 1957 , converted and reopened on October 22, 1967 as a performance center. On January 1, 1979, the first 5 km cross-country skiing World Cup for women in Europe took place on the Herzogenhorn, after the Brend ski event had been postponed due to lack of snow. During the Second World War, military exercises were carried out on the Herzogenhorn and Baldenweger Buck, for example for snipers. The Molerhüsli, where the Freiburg painter Karl Hauptmann lived and worked from around 1920 until his death in 1947 , is also located near the Federal Training Center . The Lahr painter Wilhelm Wickertsheimer (1886–1968) also worked as an artist on the Herzogenhorn .

Cross-country skiing

There is an extensive network of training trails on the Herzogenhorn. The routes starting at the Federal Training Center (approx. 15–20 km, depending on snow conditions) lead in tight loops over the hilly plateau between Herzogenhorn, Grafenmatt and Silberberg and are the highest cross-country skiing trails in the Black Forest (approx. 1350  m ). They are therefore often used by exercisers. The consistently demanding trails can be reached from the Feldberg Pass via the Grafenmatt lift or by crossing the alpine ski slopes of the Grafenmatt in around 20 minutes via a groomed forest path.

Stretch:

  • Yellow trail: The yellow trail leads from the Bundesleistungszentrum west past the Herzogenhorn and leads to its south side, where, if there is enough snow, it is possible to ski down to Bernau on a tracked route. From here the route leads over a few loops in the forest back to the Federal Training Center (approx. 6 km).
  • Green trail: The green trail, along with the yellow trail, is the longest of the Herzogenhorn trails (approx. 5 km)
  • Blue trail: The short blue trail runs on the plateau between the Bundesleistungszentrum and Silberberg
  • Red trail: The slightly longer red trail also runs in this area

Between Herzogenhorn, Grafenmatt and Silberberg, old cross-country ski trails can be used to identify old routes that are no longer tracked today. All of the cross-country ski runs for the Herzogenhorn area show these old routes even after years.

Alpine

The alpine terrain is not located directly on the Herzogenhorn, but on the slopes between the neighboring Grafenmatt and the Feldbergpass . Below the Herzogenhorn, however, is the start of the Hinterwald run , a ski run into the Wiesental valley that ends in Todtnau . With a length of 9.3 kilometers, the Hinterwald run is the longest ski run in Germany. The difference in altitude is 736 meters.

The Todtnau Hinterwald Inferno has been taking place on this descent since 2005 when there is sufficient snow. The race is organized by the Skiclub Todtnau 1891 and is one of the longest downhill races in Germany.
