Feldberg is a nature reserve in the Upper Black Forest natural area in the region around the eponymous Feldberg in the southern Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg .

It includes a natural area of particular variety, uniqueness and beauty and is an example of a glacially over-molded low mountain range as an important document of the post-glacial natural history. It offers diverse habitat for numerous species of animals and many, sometimes unique plant communities with arctic -alpinen, montane and Atlantic flora elements and rare, and partly from extinction endangered species. It also includes parts of Bann and Schonwald by State Forest Law § 32nd

The 4,227 hectare nature reserve around the highest point of the Feldberg ( 1,493  m above sea  level ) is located in the area of ​​the municipalities of Feldberg , Hinterzarten , Oberried and Schluchsee in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald , Bernau and Sankt Blasien in the district of Waldshut and Todtnau in the district Loerrach .

The northernmost edge extends below the high fern ( 1263.3  m ), further east to the Toter Mann ( 1321.7  m ) and into the upper Zastlertal , on the eastern edge to below the Kapellenkopf ( 1273.3  m ), to the southern edge to the Spießhorn ( 1350.8  m ), the Herzogenhorn ( 1415.6  m ), southwestern Stübenwasen ( 1388.8  m ), west to Hirsch head ( 1264.5  m ) and down into the upper St. Wilhelmer valley .

Characteristics

The area was designated as a nature reserve by ordinance on February 11, 1937 by the Baden Minister of Culture and Education. The last updated ordinance and designation as a nature reserve is from September 27, 1991 and is listed under the protected area number 3.001 at the Freiburg Regional Council. It has an area of ​​4,226.7 hectares , of which 2,343.2 hectares fall in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district , the Waldshut district with 1,144.6 hectares and the Lörrach district with 738.9 hectares. The protected area is in IUCN category IV , a biotope and species protection area. The WDPA-ID is 4402 and corresponds to the European CDDA code and the EUNIS number.

The protection purpose (§ 3) reads: “By designating the nature reserve, the Feldberg and the adjacent areas are to be preserved

  • as a significant example of a glacial shaped low mountain range,
  • as an important document of post-glacial natural history,
  • as informative illustrative material of the landscape and cultural history,
  • as a diverse habitat for numerous animal species and many, in some cases unique, plant communities with arctic-alpine, montane and atlantic floral elements as well as rare, e.g. Some species threatened with extinction,
  • as an excellent demonstration and research object for science and
  • as a natural area of ​​particular diversity, uniqueness and beauty. "

This makes it the oldest before the Wutach Gorge nature reserve and at the same time the largest nature reserve in Baden-Württemberg before the Präg glacier basin . Since 1989 it has been looked after by a full-time nature conservation warden ( Feldberg ranger ). Since 2001, the nature conservation center of the Southern Black Forest in the House of Nature on the Feldberg has been responsible for the protection of the protected areas .

Landscape protection areas

The nature reserve is a partner protection area of ​​the landscape protection areas of the same name LSG 3.15.022 in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district with 217.2 hectares, LSG 3.36.020 in the Lörrach district with 124.4 hectares and LSG 3.37.016 in the Waldshut district with 0.24 hectares. The purpose of the protection is to “secure the nature reserve of the same name, maintain the efficiency of a balanced natural environment and guarantee the special recreational value”.
