The nature reserve Leuengraben is located in the area of the communities Grenzach-Wyhlen and Rheinfelden (Baden) in the district of Lörrach .
Characteristics
The nature reserve was designated by ordinance of the Freiburg Regional Council of December 16, 1988 and has a size of 139.9359 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 3.167. The CDDA code for the nature reserve is 164443 and corresponds to the WDPA ID .
Location and description
The Leuengraben nature reserve is located in the municipality of Grenzach-Wyhlen in the Wyhlen district with 68.9916 ha and the community Rheinfelden (Baden) in the Herten district with 70.9442 ha. The nature reserve consists mainly of near-natural forests with a great variety at different locations and thus different types of biotopes. It is the habitat for a multitude of rare plant and animal species.
Protection purpose
The purpose of protection is the preservation of the »Leuengraben« and its surroundings
1. as a habitat for a multitude of rare animal and plant species in different habitats (mainly near-natural forests);
2. as an area of great scientific, ecological and cultural value.

The following species have been recorded in the Leunengraben nature reserve :

- Aconitum lycoctonum subsp. vulparia (yellow monkshood), Actaea spicata ( St. Christopher's herb ), Anthericum ramosum (branchy grass lily), Aquilegia vulgaris agg. (Species group Common Columbine), Arum maculatum (Arum), Aruncus dioicus (Forest Geißbart), Asarum Europaeum (European wild ginger), Asplenium scolopendrium (Hart's tongue), Asplenium trichomanes (Schwarzstieliger Strichfarn), Asplenium viride (Green Strichfarn), Aster amellus ( Lime aster), Atropa bella-donna (deadly nightshade), Buxus sempervirens (evergreen box), Daphne mezereum (cellar neck), Epipactis helleborine agg. (Type Group Broad Stendelwurz), Hieracium caespitosum (Hieracium Caespitosum), Ilex aquifolium (Common Holly), Lilium martagon (Türkenbund), Listera ovata (twayblade) Melittis melissophyllum (Bastard Balm), Monotropa hypopitys (Real spruce asparagus), Neottia nidus- avis (nest root), Orchis mascula (stately orchid), Polystichum aculeatum agg. (Species group lobed shield fern), Polystichum lonchitis (lance shield fern), Primula elatior (large cowslip), Rosa sherardii (velvet rose), Rosa villosa agg. (Species group apple-rose), Salvia glutinosa (sticky sage), Scilla bifolia (two-leaved star hyacinth), Sorbus aria (real whitebeam), Sorbus torminalis (service tree), Staphylea pinnata (blackberry), Tamus communis (pitwort), Trifolium rubens ( Trifolium rubens Clover), Ulmus glabra (mountain elm), Ulmus laevis (flutter elm), Vincetoxicum hirundinaria (swallow root)
