The Velvet Rose ( Rosa sherardii ), also Sherard Rose or Sammet Rose called, is a plant of the genus roses ( Rosa ) within the family of the rose family (Rosaceae).

description

The velvet rose grows as a richly branched, short-branched shrub that reaches heights of up to 2 meters. The bark of the young twigs is frosted. The spines are straight or curved.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The leaf blade is pinnate unpaired with rarely three, usually five or seven leaflets. The leaf spindle is tomentose. The leaflets are elliptical to broadly ovate, double-toothed, dull gray-green, densely hairy on both sides and glandular on the underside.

Several flowers stand together in umbels . The hermaphrodite flowers have a diameter of 3 to 5 centimeters and are radially symmetrical and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals are sparsely pinnate, densely hairy, erect after the anthesis and still preserved on the ripe rose hip. The five petals are bright pink with a light center. The styles are short and free. The scars are hairy with white wool.

The flowering period extends from June to July.

The rose hips, which are red when ripe, are egg-shaped to circular, 1.2 to 2 cm thick and have glandular bristles.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28, 35 or 42.

Occurrence

The velvet rose is found in Europe (with the exception of the Apennine Peninsula). There are sites in Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Poland, the former Czechoslovakia , the former Yugoslavia , Bulgaria, Spain and France.

The velvet rose is base-hold, i.e. i.e., it prefers basic soils . It inhabits dry rock bushes, forest edges, hedges, roads and roadsides and gray dunes. In Central Europe it is a character species of the Corylo-Rosetum vosagiacae from the Berberidion association.

Systematics

The first publication of Rosa sherardii was by Hugh Davies . Synonyms for Rosa sherardii Davies are: Rosa omissa Déségl. , Rosa pomifera subsp. omissa parmentier , Rosa tomentosa subsp. omissa (Déségl.) Rouy , Rosa tomentosa subsp. sherardii (Davies) A.Pedersen .

Rosa sherardii belongs to the sub-section Vestitae (also called felt roses) from the section Caninae in the sub-genus Rosa within the genus Rosa . Closely related European species from the sub-section felt roses ( Vestitae ) are soft rose ( Rosa mollis ) and apple rose ( Rosa villosa ).
