The mouth of the Wehra is a nature reserve and an accompanying landscape protection area in the districts of Lörrach and Waldshut in Baden-Württemberg.

Characteristics

The mouth of the weir was given protection area no. 3,240 designated as a nature reserve. The area has an area of ​​12.1 hectares.

Location and description

It is where the Wehra flows into the Rhine near Brennet , a district of Wehr . The NSG is 10.9 hectares in the area of ​​the city of Wehr, Öflingen in the district of Waldshut and 1.2 hectares in the area of ​​the municipality of Schwörstadt in the district of Lörrach. A further 9.4 hectares are designated as a landscape protection area under the numbers 3.37.020 and 3.36.021 as a buffer and supplementary zone to protect against impairment and to achieve the protection purpose.

The lower course of the Wehra was corrected in 1879 after floods caused severe damage in 1807, 1877 and 1882.

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose of the NSG is the preservation of the western area of ​​the Wehra estuary into the Rhine and the reed and shallow water zones on the banks of the Rhine as a natural area of ​​special character and beauty as well as an important breeding and migration area for numerous bird species, some of which are threatened with extinction.

The main protection purpose of the LSG is to secure the nature reserve from impairment and to implement the protection purpose mentioned there, in particular to protect the animal world from possible disturbing effects from noise and unrest in adjacent areas.
