The nature reserve Kiesgrube Käppelin is located in the municipality of Weil am Rhein in the district of Lörrach .

Location and description

The nature reserve Kiesgrube Käppelin is located in the municipality of Weil am Rhein in the district of Weil with a total size of around 22 hectares. The nature reserve, a former gravel pit, contains valuable habitats of various types such as B. hollows and ponds, gravel soil, gravel and alluvial corridors, ruderal communities, shrubbery and succession stages as well as various lawn communities. It offers a habitat for a large number of animal species, some of which are endangered, especially bird and amphibian species, and is a resting and wintering area for numerous endangered bird species.

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose of the nature reserve is the preservation and development of a former gravel pit and its surroundings as 1. an area with valuable habitats of different characteristics such as B. hollows and ponds, gravel soil, gravel and alluvial corridors, ruderal communities, shrubbery and succession stages as well as various lawn communities; 2. Habitat for a large number of animal species, some of which are highly endangered, in particular bird and amphibian species; 3. Resting and wintering area for numerous bird species, some of which are threatened with extinction; 4. Significant biotope in the middle of a metropolitan area.
