House of Nature on the Feldberg in the Black Forest

The Southern Black Forest Nature Conservation Center is located on the Feldberg and is housed in the House of Nature together with the office of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park . Its aim is to document the cultural and natural landscape of the southern Black Forest. It offers permanent and special exhibitions as well as events and guided tours through the Feldberg nature reserve, the largest and oldest nature reserve in Baden-Württemberg. It was opened on December 14, 2001 as the seventh and largest nature conservation center in Baden-Württemberg. The multimedia exhibition in the nature conservation center had around 360,000 visitors in the first ten years of its existence.

building

The House of Nature was not built directly on the summit of the Feldberg, rather it can be reached on public roads in the immediate vicinity of the valley station of the Feldbergbahn to the Seebuck summit ( B 317 in Feldberg-Ort ). For visitors who want to experience the Feldberg completely car-free , the Feldberger Hof bus stop there enables the choice of means of transport; the mountain bike path is a challenge by bike because of the differences in altitude, hiking trails lead directly past the house, circular hiking trails around the Feldberg begin there. The building envelope of the Haus der Natur is made of parabolic curved glued wood trusses made from local spruce. In 2010 it was awarded the architecture prize "Baukultur Schwarzwald" from the Baden-Württemberg Chamber of Architects and the Freiburg Regional Council.

organization

The Nature Conservation Center Southern Black Forest is organized as a non-profit foundation. There is no share capital; the foundation partners assume the costs that are not covered by their own income: the state of Baden-Württemberg, the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Lörrach and Waldshut, the municipality of Feldberg and the Black Forest Association.

In addition to 4 permanent employees, the center employs young people in the Voluntary Ecological Year (2 places), federal volunteers (2 places), information desk staff, summer and winter rangers as well as numerous committed nature guides. The Feldberg ranger from the Freiburg regional council and the Feldberg forester from the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district are affiliated with the nature conservation center. In addition to the sovereign powers to control the nature reserve as full-time nature conservation officers, the rangers take on part of the public relations work and organize the visitor management on the Feldberg. In looking after the nature reserve, the center is supported by numerous voluntary helpers, mainly from the Black Forest Association. In addition, there is a close cooperation with the Hochschwarzwald Tourismus GmbH.

The statutes of the Foundation for Nature Conservation Center Southern Black Forest provide for the promotion of nature conservation and landscape management in the southern Black Forest, as well as the operation of a nature conservation center.
