Eschengrundmoos is a nature reserve in the district of Hinterzarten in Baden-Württemberg .

Characteristics

The nature reserve was designated by ordinance of the Freiburg Regional Council of December 4, 1984 and has a size of around 40.3 hectares. It is listed under the protected area number 3.140. The CDDA code for the nature reserve is 163002 and corresponds to the WDPA ID .

Location and description

The protected area is located around 2000 meters southwest of Hinterzarten in a valley basin formed by the Würm Ice Age. It is located in the natural area 155 - Southern Black Forest within the natural spatial main unit 15 - Black Forest . It belongs to the Southern Black Forest Nature Park and is completely enclosed by the nature reserve No. 3.15.026 Breitnau-Hinterzarten . It is also part of the 1,765 hectare FFH area 8114-341 High Black Forest around Hinterzarten . As a result of the construction of a drivable forest road through the moor and the creation of drainage ditches, there has been an immigration of spruce trees into parts of the moor and a decline in peat-forming vegetation. This was countered in 1983 and 1991 with the installation of barriers in the trench system and the filling of trenches with peat. A scientific study of the effects of these renaturation measures carried out in 2015 showed very positive results, especially for the northern part of the moor. A new project "Ecological restoration of the moor in the Eschengrundmoos nature reserve" started in 2016 with a comprehensive area analysis. The project is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Nature Conservation Fund Foundation and funds from the "Special Program to Strengthen Biodiversity" of the State of Baden-Württemberg. Based on the area analysis, moor ecological development goals for the area were formulated. By the end of 2019, the moor areas are to be completely renovated from an ecological point of view, after which regular monitoring of the area is planned.

Protection purpose

The main protection purpose is the preservation of the Eschengrundmoos as a habitat for a multitude of plants and animal species threatened with extinction and decline and as a characteristic moor landscape of the Black Forest of extraordinary diversity, uniqueness and beauty.
