The Mathisleweiher is an almost 2 hectare moor lake in the Black Forest. It is located in the Upper Black Forest between Feldberg in the west and the Titisee in the east in the area of the municipality of Hinterzarten at about 999  m above sea level. NN southwest of the main town in the nature reserve Eschengrundmoos . The pond is traversed from west-southwest to east-northeast by the Zartenbach , which on the eastern slope of the Ramselehöhe ( 1112  m above sea level ) at about 1055  m above sea level. NN rises, takes in the Eschengrundmoosbach from the right from the protected moor and is only a little under a kilometer long when it enters the lake. A shorter stream runs from the north from the stucco forest. The fish stock of the Mathisleweiher includes chub, carp, trout, pike, roach, tench and the now rare minnows .

The lake can only be reached on foot from Hinterzarten. A hiking trail that goes from there a little north and a little south of the lake is connected by a clasp that touches the east bank.

Together with Mathislehof, Mathislemühle and Mathislewald, the pond belongs to the Müller-Fahnenberg Foundation of the University of Freiburg.

Origin of the name

The Mathisleweiher is named after the nearby Mathislehof, which in turn is named after Mathias Benitz, who owned the farm from 1702–1742 (his grandfather Mathis Benitz had also been a farmer there from 1615–1624).
