Magangué is a municipality ( municipio ) in Colombia in Bolívar Department .

geography

Magangué is located on the Río Magdalena , 20 km north of the mouth of the Río Cauca and 240 km south of Cartagena . Magangué is at an altitude of 49 meters and has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. In the south of the municipality, the area rises to about 700 meters. Magangué borders in the north on Córdoba and Santa Bárbara de Pinto in the Departamento del Magdalena , in the south on Achí , in the east on Talaiga Nuevo , Cicuco , Mompós and Pinillos and in the west on Buenavista , Galeras , San Benito Abad and Sucre in the Departamento de Sucre

The municipality of Magangué has 123,982 inhabitants, of which 86,566 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The city was founded in 1610 by Diego Carvajal. She flourished through the trade on the Río Magdalena and through the pilgrimage to the patroness of the city and the cathedral, the Virgin of Candelaria . Therefore, in 1776 Antonio de la Torre y Miranda caused the city to be renamed Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Magangué .

As a result of the strong population growth since the 1980s, Magangué is now the second largest city in the Department of Bolívar.
