María La Baja is located in the north of Bolívar in the sub-region of Montes de María at the foot of the mountain range of the same name at an altitude of 14 meters and has an average annual temperature of 28 ° C. history

María La Baja was probably founded in 1535 by Alonso de Heredia, brother of Pedro de Heredia , on the Zaimo stream and near the indigenous village of Tuya . Another tradition dates the founding to 1534 by Alonso de Heredia, when he was on a military expedition against the indigenous cacique Tolú . According to a third version, it was not founded until 1548 by Alonso López de Ayala.
