Simití is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Bolivar in northern Colombia .

geography

Simití is located in the south of Bolívar in the Magdalena Medio sub-region on the Ciénaga de Simití , a wetland, and has an average temperature of 24 to 32 ° C. The municipality is bordered by Morales in the north, Puerto Wilches in the Department of Santander in the east, San Pablo in the south and Santa Rosa del Sur in the west .

Demographics

The municipality of Simití has 21,620 inhabitants, of which 11,357 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Simití was founded in 1535 by Antonio Lebrija.

economy

The main industry in Simití is agriculture . In particular, corn , cassava , bananas , rice , beans and cocoa are grown. Animal husbandry also plays an important role. However, the basis of the economy of most families is fishing , even if this is suffering from the deteriorating water quality of the Ciénaga (wetland) and unsuitable fishing methods.

Attractions

The Templo doctrinero de San Antonio de Padua church was declared a Colombian national heritage in 1993 .
