Arenal , also known as Arenal del Sur , is a municipality ( municipio ) in the south of the Colombian department of Bolívar .

geography

Arenal is located in Bolívar , about 400 km south of Cartagena and has an average temperature of 29 ° C. Arenal lies at an altitude of 65 m above sea level. NN . The municipality borders Río Viejo in the north, Morales in the south-east and Montecristo in the south-west .

The municipality of Arenal has 20,625 inhabitants, of which 5751 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The Arenal area was settled mainly for mining activities between 1540 and 1850. Miners, Spanish traders and runaway slaves settled in the region. The settlement was formalized probably in the middle of the 17th century by Catalina de Ochoa. Arenal only became an independent municipality in 1996.

economy

The main industries in Arenal are agriculture , cattle production and fishing . In addition, clandestine logging and illegal mining ( gold extraction ) are carried out.
