San Jacinto is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Bolivar in northern Colombia .

geography

San Jacinto is located in the north of Bolívar in the sub-region of Montes de María about 92 km from Cartagena and has an average temperature of 27 ° C. The municipality borders San Juan Nepomuceno in the north, Zambrano in the east , El Carmen de Bolívar in the south and west and María La Baja in the north-west .

Demographics

The municipality of San Jacinto has 21,644 inhabitants, of which 21,149 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

In 1776 an expedition came to the place of today's town center, which initially called the place El Sitio . The official establishment took place a year later under the name San Jacinto de Duanga , named after a Spanish officer. The first group of settlers included 82 families and 60 slaves. Runaway slaves founded various palenques in the hills of the Montes de María and near Mahates .

Gaita player ( gaitero )

The San Jacinto Patronage Festival is held every August. There are religious festivities, but also horse riding and dance events. A Gaita Festival ( Festival Autóctono de Gaitas ) will also be held as part of the celebrations . In San Jacinto the traditional music of the Colombian Caribbean coast plays an important role. In particular, the Gaita instrument and the Gaita players ( gaiteros ) have a special position.
