Mahates is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Bolivar in northern Colombia . The Palenque village of San Basilio de Palenque is administratively a corregimiento to Mahates. Mahates is part of the unofficial metropolitan area of ​​Cartagena , the metropolitan area of Cartagena .

geography

Mahates is located in the north of Bolívar in the sub-region Dique Bolivarense on the Canal del Dique , 55 km from Cartagena and has an average temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality borders San Estanislao , Soplaviento and San Cristóbal in the north, María La Baja and San Juan Nepomuceno in the south, Arroyohondo in the east and Arjona in the west .

history

Mahates was founded in 1533 by the conquistador Pedro de Heredia in order to better control the indigenous people of the region and to be able to exploit them in the encomienda system . The Canal del Dique was built in 1650. The trade over the canal shaped Mahates for a long time. A large part of the town center was destroyed by fire in 1860. With the construction of the railway, the canal and thus Mahates lost its importance from 1894.
