Calamar is a municipality ( municipio ) in Colombia in the department of Bolívar .

geography

Calamar is located in the north of Bolívar near the Colombian Caribbean coast on the Canal del Dique and the Río Magdalena and has an average temperature of 28 ° C. Calamar lies at a height of 10  m above sea level. NN , 86 km from Barranquilla . The municipality is bordered to the north by Santa Lucía and Suán in the department of Atlántico , to the east by Pedraza and Cerro de San Antonio in the department of Magdalena , to the south by San Juan Nepomuceno and El Guamo and to the west by Arroyohondo , Mahates , San Cristóbal and Soplaviento .

The municipality of Calamar has 24,573 inhabitants, of which 14,003 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Calamar was officially founded around 1848 after the first residents had reached the place a few years earlier. Calamar developed into an important river port on the Río Magdalena, which from 1894 was connected by a railway line to Cartagena , 113 km away . During this time, trade flourished in Calamar. Multinational companies such as the Tropical Oil Company and Italian, German, French and Venezuelan, Lebanese and Syrian traders came. In addition, the place was served by the then airline SCADTA (today Avianca ). In the 20th century, however, Calamar lost its important role in the Colombian commercial landscape, even if the city is still a river port.

The main industries of Calamar are trade , cattle production and agriculture and the place benefits from its location on the Río Magdalena.
