San Benito Abad is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Sucre in Colombia .

geography

San Benito Abad is located in the south of Sucre , in the San Jorge sub-region at an altitude of 20 m above sea level. NN . The municipality is bordered to the north by El Roble and Galeras , to the east by Magangué in the department of Bolívar and Sucre and Majagual , to the south by Ayapel in the department of Córdoba and to the west by San Marcos , Caimito and Chinú in the department of Córdoba.

With an area of 1542 km², San Benito Abad is the largest municipality in Sucres and is located 51 km southeast of Sincelejo .

history

Benito Figueroa y Barrantes, the governor of the province of Cartagena , initiated the establishment of San Benito Abad in 1669, but this was not carried out until eight years (1677) later.

religion

When he was recalled as governor, Figueroa y Barrantes commissioned the creation of a statue of Christ for San Benito Abad, who is now venerated as Señor de los Milagros and who is ascribed to miracles. A basilica, the Basílica del Señor de los Milagros, was dedicated to this statue . Two pilgrimages are organized every year .
