Ayapel is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cordoba in Colombia .
geography
Ayapel is located in the east of Cordoba on the Río San Jorge . The municipality is characterized by swamps , of which the Ciénaga de Ayapel with a size of 40,000 hectares is the most important. Ayapel is about 145 km from Montería and has an average temperature of 28 ° C. The municipality borders in the north and east on the Departamento de Sucre ( San Marcos , San Benito Abad , Majagual and Guaranda ), in the east also on the Departamento de Bolívar ( San Jacinto del Cauca ), in the south on the Departamento de Antioquia ( Caucasia and Nechí ) as well as at La Apartada and to the west at Buenavista and Pueblo Nuevo .

history
Ayapel is the oldest town in Cordoba. It goes back to an indigenous settlement of Zenú , where the name of the cacique Yapel back. Ayapel was officially founded in 1535 by Alonso de Heredia. A re-establishment took place 35 years later by Juan de Rodas y Carvajal under the name San Jerónimo del Monte . Only five years later, the settlement was relocated to its current location and was given the name San Jerónimo de Ayapel .
economy
Ayapel's main industries are rice cultivation and the timber industry . The fishery is being hampered by falling fish numbers due to overfishing and pollution of the waters with mercury , which is released into nature through illegal gold mining .
