San Pelayo is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cordoba in Colombia .

geography

San Pelayo is located in the north of the Sinú Medio sub-region in Córdoba at an altitude of 8  m above sea level. NN up to 235  m above sea level NN , 30 km from Montería . The area of ​​the municipality is traversed by the Río Sinú and has shares in the foothills of the Serranía de Abibe , a northern branch of the Western Cordillera of the Andes . The municipality borders in the north on Santa Cruz de Lorica and Cotorra , in the east on Chimá and Ciénaga de Oro , in the south on Cereté and Montería and in the west on Puerto Escondido .

The municipality of San Pelayo has 45,396 inhabitants, of which 8659 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, an indigenous settlement called Cacagual lived in the area of ​​today's San Pelayo . The modern place was founded in 1772 by Antonio De la Torre y Miranda. San Pelayo has had parish status since 1923.

Culture

The Festival Nacional del Porro has been held in San Pelayo since 1977 , where groups of Porro music meet once a year . The porro is a style of music that is common on the Colombian Caribbean coast. The dance performances are also an important part of the festival.

economy

The main industries of San Pelayo are agriculture and cattle production , although the economy is not very well developed and production is almost exclusively for the regional market.
