The Río Sinú is an approximately 415 km long tributary of the Caribbean Sea in Colombia .
River course
The Río Sinú rises in the Western Cordillera at an altitude of about 3100 m , 5 km north of the 3730 m high Cerro Paramillo . The upper reaches of the Río Sinú lies in the Parque Nacional Natural Paramillo . The Río Sinú initially flows 100 km in a north-northwest direction through the mountains. At river kilometer 326 the Río Esmeralda meets the Río Sinú from the left. At river kilometer 285, the river is dammed by the Urrá-I dam over a length of 25 km. The Río Verde also flows into the upper end of the reservoir when coming from the southwest. Below the dam, the Río Sinú flows through the north Colombian lowlands in a north-northeast direction. It passes the cities of Tierralta , Montería , Santa Cruz de Lorica and San Bernardo del Viento . On the last 4 kilometers, an estuary branches off to the left and right.
Hydrology
The Río Sinú drains an area of 10,180 km². The mean discharge is 373 m³ / s. The annual sediment load of the Río Sinú is 6.1 million tons.
