Santa Cruz de Lorica , also called Lorica , is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Cordoba on the Colombian Caribbean coast .

geography

Santa Cruz de Lorica is located in the north of Córdoba near the Caribbean Sea , on the lower reaches of the Río Sinú . Santa Cruz de Lorica is 60 km from Montería . The municipality is bordered by San Antero , San Bernardo del Viento , Purísima and Momil in the north, San Pelayo and Cotorra in the south, Momil and Chimá in the east and San Bernardo del Viento, Puerto Escondido and Moñitos in the west .

history

Santa Cruz de Lorica was founded in 1740, initially on the island of Gaita in the Río Sinú . As a result, however, it expanded to the surrounding country. The city was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1919 and then rebuilt. It was also regularly affected by floods until a protective wall was built in 1938. The region was a destination for migrants from the Muslim area, particularly from Turkey , Lebanon and Syria .
